Un concert de la meilleure eau donné le 15 04 2022 et diffusé en direct sur BBC 3 : Easter at King's .

Ian Skelly presents a live Good Friday concert from King's College, Cambridge. In January 1783 Mozart wrote to his father saying he had promised to complete a setting of the Mass. It was performed later that year in Salzburg with his new wife Constanze as one of the soprano soloists, but in fact remains unfinished, suggesting that Mozart perhaps borrowed bits from existing works for that performance.

Voici un très bon exemple de l'art de la lecture révélant l'intensité dramatique d'un récit essentiellement descriptif.  Si l'arrivée sur la page de l'émission est trop tardive, il faudra aller lire les 3 pages du récit dans



plutôt que de regarder un montage de 3' et une lecture terrible de 30 minutes, seules présences audio en ligne de cette histoire . Sous la lecture en ligne, on trouve ce commentaire du récit allégorique de JG Ballard :  

"When I read this story close to 50 years ago I was immediately enthralled and captivated by the imagery. Today I can more fully appreciate Mr. Ballard's insightful commentary on the regression of society."

"The garden of the villa extended for some two hundred yards below the terrace, sloping down to a miniature lake, spanned by a white bridge... Here in the garden the air seemed brighter. As was his custom before beginning his evening stroll, Count Axel looked out across the plain to the final rise...and saw that the advance column of an enormous army was moving slowly over the horizon..."
The Count manages to repel the advance of the army by magically re-arranging time - time and time again! But soon the tools that help him will no longer will work.
So how will he and his beloved wife - who is indoors, playing a Mozart rondo - manage to survive the threat, as it marches forward, closer and closer...

Deux maîtres étaient à l’œuvre en plus de l'auteur pour la transposition en six épisodes de 30 minutes de "La guerre des mondes" (1898)  : l'acteur Paul Daneman qui joue John Nicholson, tout repose sur lui, il est exceptionnel ; et puis David Cain du "BBC Radiophonic Workshop" qui produit une formidable ambiance sonore, à la fois effrayante et agréable par son retour régulier (lors de l'avancée des tripodes).

L'occasion de (re)lire le roman et de s'interroger sur la disparition des œuvres de science-fiction transposées en dramatiques radiophoniques. Les récits d'imagination haletants présentant de nombreux rebondissements ont fait place à des autofictions amorphes et geignardes ou à des récits de voyage joués (en général en public) par de médiocres interprètes. Un appauvrissement substantiel de la culture.

La présentation de l'émission ci-dessous résume adéquatement les sujets abordés dans l'émission. Ce qu'il faut entendre, c'est la voix, le ton, l'humour, la franchise de  Diana Melly à l'âge de 85 ans. Exemplaire retour sur une vie décrite dans Take A Girl Like Me: Life With George 2006.

The author Diana Melly tells Michael Berkeley about her life lived on a rollercoaster: she has experienced passion, great friendships and celebrity but also depression, illness, heartbreak and the deaths of two of her children.

Running through her life for 46 years was her enduring - but extremely complicated - marriage to the jazz musician and bon viveur George Melly, who died in 2007.

She has written two novels, a searingly honest memoir, and has co-edited the letters of her friend Jean Rhys as well as campaigning for charities concerned with dementia and drug abuse.

Diana Melly talks movingly about the deaths of her children and the happiness she and George found at the end of his life. And she describes her passion for trying new things late in life including ballroom dancing, philosophy and riding a tandem.

But her greatest new passion, developed in her eighties, is for opera and she chooses her favourite arias by Puccini, Massenet, Mozart, Gluck and Verdi.

And she reveals why, having been married to a jazzman for 46 years, there is no jazz on her music list.

Comment sait-on que France Culture nous prive de documentaires, de pièces radiophoniques, de conversations érudites ? En écoutant d'autres radios ou les moutures de France Culture avant septembre 1999 (sauf exceptions après).

Ainsi de ce portrait sonore, créé en 2009, The Lake, An evocative sound portrait of the UK's largest lake, Lough Neagh et rediffusé régulièrement (la dernière fois le 31 octobre 2022), et l'on comprend d'ailleurs pourquoi : c'est le haut du panier de l'art radiophonique. Où trouve-t-on à France Culture une demi-heure où l'on entend des gens en studio, au bord de l'eau, dans un bateau évoquer la beauté d'un lieu selon les saisons, les oiseaux, les plantes, les insectes, les poissons ? Conter des mythes et légendes ? Détailler la géographie et la géologie du lieu ? Où entend-on à France Culture des atmosphères (soundscapes) d'eau, de vent, d'oiseaux, des accents de terroir ? Nulle part depuis des décennies. Avant, oui, grâce soit rendue à notre cher contributeur Fred de Rouen, disparu trop tôt, qui relaya en 2017 un chef d’œuvre de documentaire naturaliste et ethnographique : ''Les cris des eaux mortes'', immersion en Brière. Sa date ? 1979, il y a près de 45 ans. Depuis ? Rien. Les Français ne méritent pas qu'une équipe radiophonique fasse un documentaire de ce type sur un de nos lacs, de nos cours d'eau ou de nos côtes. Les Français ont droit à la Saint-Valentin, l'amour, le couple, le sexe. Aujourd'hui comme hier et demain.

Les concerts du midi à BBC 3, surtout présentés par Sarah Walker, offrent de belles interprétations d’œuvres du répertoire données lors de festivals au Royaume-Uni et en Europe. Ici pour le plat principal le quintette pour clarinette de Brahms que le clarinettiste invité à le présenter met au-dessus de celui de Mozart !

Dans les 5 premières minutes de cette adaptation radiophonique de qualité (interprétation, montage, ambiances sonores) de John Bunyan - The Pilgrim's Progress (2004 & 2020, disponible sur YouTube ici), on croit entendre, par la voix du personnage ici appelé Graceless (et plus tard rebaptisé "Christian"), l'un des nombreux prophètes de malheur qu'invite complaisamment France Culture. Flagrant est le parallèle entre le puritanisme britannique du XVIIe siècle et la forme moderne de ce courant chez les nombreux donneurs de leçons de décroissance et de morale à France Culture.

Elgar and Schumann from Zagreb avec un Croatian Radio-Television Symphony Orchestra qui en veut sous le chef  Enrico Dindo et qui a quelque peu écrasé Asier Polo dans le concerto d'Elgar.

C'est la fête dans la 4e symphonie de Schumann dont Jonathan Swain rappelle (à 36'40) la genèse : "The one Schumann referred to as 'Clara Symphony', he wanted the music to symbolize the happiness of their first year of marriage".
